NEW ALBUM BY GOOSEPIMP ORCHESTRA!

I am so happy to have been a part of this project. It was recorded by mastermind Dan Fox at Hi-N-Dry studio in Somerville, MA, which is owned and operated by friends of Mark Sandman and the band Morphine. Sandman’s old modified guitars hang all over the walls, and relics like pictures, posters, tour diaries, lyric sheets, and old instruments can be found in just about every corner. It was pretty special to play the bari sax in a space dedicated to Morphine. And if you don’t know why, please do yourself a favor and listen to them. More important to this session being amazing was the sheer amount of time and energy the 9 of us put into making it sound the way it does. That 4-day marathon session can only confirm- birds of a feather flock together.

A 10-song compilation of music made between the summer of 2009 and the summer of 2010. It is a snapshot of the stuff I was involved with during my senior year at UML.

ALBUM LINER NOTES:
The past year has been an exciting time for me musically. I had the opportunity to tour and record with the most devoted and talented musicians that I have ever met. The Goosepimp Orchestra is a group of 8 guys, but we would have no reason to make our music without our beautiful, passionate, helpful, and funky extended family. Thanks for your infinite support yall! Enjoy “Strap On,” from our latest Fallout Shelter performance on WUML, and “Take The Wheel,” from our self-recorded and self-released full length album The Biggest Bang. I also had the pleasure to help Nick get The Sinbusters off the ground, by drumming for a year and a half, and recording and mixing Prime Blowout, our 8 song EP. The songs here come from that album, recorded at Friendly Square in Medford and a few spots in Lowell. Late in 2009 I began recording spoken word poems written by Nate the Poet and adding music to them later. “The River Bank Bend” was recorded by a river in Colorado, and the music was added once back in Lowell. Underneath “Beauty,” the UML String Project can be heard warming up and tuning. I am also grateful to Brett Apitz for helping me record “Cherrapunji” and “Country Music” in the UML facilities, and to all the musicians who helped create this makeshift band that I call Folkin’ A. You will also hear two songs from a brand new project called President Soup. We did a version of “It Dont Mean A Thing” at Centro in May 2010, and an original tune called “Propaganda,” recorded later that month at the 119 Gallery in Lowell. Thanks to all the musicians that have shared their passion, and to you for listening.

In Walked Biscuit 114 by Nice Bass

This is the group Puritan Slang in the UMass Lowell senior studio for Mat Gansenberg’s Live to Multitrack project. The tune was composed by Mark “Big Daddy” Brack, and features Mark Brack on guitar, Tyler Kingsland on Bass, Seth Bailin on saxophone, and Evan Gillis on drumset. This tune is a few years old, and after a long time having not heard it, I dug it up and was pleasantly surprised at the quality. Listen to Evan’s fills in between the choruses.

On Thursday, November 11, 2010, your bowl is going to be filled with hot soup made with local ingredients. You’ll be walking around looking at student art (a lot of it is food-related) and meeting new people. And your ears are going to be filled with live music from a band that values the healing properties and social aspects of food, President Soup.

Food, music, and art. Hm… they all sound like art to me. Have you ever seen a dish so full of color and beauty that you didn’t even want to eat it? That your fork might disturb the plates harmony? Or has the smell of a simmering pot of stew ever stimulated your mind more than anything hanging on a wall at a museum? And has a song ever lifted your spirits, or taken you out of a rut? Like you just ate some wonderful medicine? Music and food have more in common than one might think. They are both created with similar things in mind: time and rhythm, harmony of the flavors/timbres, new ingredients, presentation, and so much more. So come to Hotung (44 Professors Row, Somerville, MA) on Thursday night to exercise all your senses.

Meet DJ Brass Monkey and DJ Code Blue. We are the new purveyors of musical madness traveling over electromagnetic radiation tuned to the frequency of 91.5 Megahertz. Every Thursday at noon, from an underground location in Lowell, Massachusetts, we hop aboard the Time Machine and take our listeners on a journey through the ages. We play music from a different year every week, showcasing music from a wide range of styles, but focusing on the time in which it had significance. After all, music is time, no? Rhythm and meter keep the beat on a small scale, in what we perceive as the “present.” Months, years, and decades keep time on a larger scale, outlining what becomes the past and future.
I may try to dig up the old archives of the Time Machine from when it was a baby, with original DJ Matt The Medicine Man Migliori and myself, but for now, here are the past few weeks of the show. We featured the years 1986 and 2007; I hope you enjoy the segments!

This summer I’m teaching private Guitar and Bass lessons at Centre Music House in Framingham, MA. It is a great place to learn a new instrument or buy strings for your guitar tuned to drop-C. And starting July 19, I will be running the rock band camp for the rest of the summer. Watch out Jack Black! So if you live in the Metro-West area and are thinking about private music lessons, stop in and meet us.

Also, be on the lookout for a new series of music books created by yours truly. I’ve been working on advanced studies for the saxophone for a couple years, and I think some day soon it will get published. The first book takes you through augmented and diminished exercises, along with chromatic scale studies and large-interval exercises. I’m looking for people who are good with music notation software and want to help me edit the thing.
